Are you in the mood for a Korean drama that offers a delightful mix of mystery, romance and unexpected twists? Look no further than “My Lovely Liar”.
My Lovely Liar introduces us to Mok Soll Hee, a young woman with an extraordinary gift - she can hear when people tell a lie. Her life takes an intriguing turn when she encounters music Kim Do Ha, who is hiding a dark past of his own. From their first encounter, Sol Hee becomes Do Ha’s protector.
After the first meeting, the series takes us five years into the future. Kim Do Ha is now a successful music producer who with the help of his friend Jo Deuk Chan keeps his identity hidden from the public, while Mok Sol Hee runs a coffee and tarot reading shop that covers her private job as a Lie Hunter for VIP clients. We catch a glimpse of the events that perhaps shaped Sol Hee’s unique ability as well as the haunting past that Do Ha is trying to hide from.
My Lovely Liar did a good job in portraying the evolving relationship between its leads Kim Do ha and Mok Sol Hee as they reveal their secrets to each other, their feelings deepen, leading to a heartwarming decision to start dating. Their bond faces external challenges, such as Do Ha’s mother's desire for him to move to Germany. But still Do Ha decided to stay and be with Sol Here, emphasizing the comfort and sense of safety he found in her presence.
However, with a video being spread of his bare face, Kim Do Ha, in a bid to try and protect his friend and the company he runs, decides to cut ties with J Entertainment. With articles being published calling him a murderer, the past Kim Do ha tried so hard to hide from caught up with him, putting both him and Sol Hee in danger. But with Sol Hee’s unwavering support, Kim Do ha becomes more determined than ever to uncover the truth behind his ex-girlfriends death.
As the story progresses, Kim Do Ha and Mok Sol Hee work together to uncover the truth. However, the journey isn’t without consequences, as Sol Hee loses her ability after an accident involving Deuk Chan. However, the touching way Kim Do Ha supports Sol Hee during this challenging time adds a sweetness and tenderness that further adds to the dimensions of their relationship.
For me, one of the series’ highlights is a mind-boggling plot twist towards the end. The revelation that Jo Deuk Chan is the true culprit behind the murder adds an unexpected layer to the story. What’s even more impressive is Kim Do Ha’s understanding of not so much his actions, but the suffering he went through afterwards, adding depth to the characters and their interactions.
My Lovely Liar is a must-watch series that skillfully weaves a compelling narrative, highlighting the natural chemistry between the leads portrayed by Hwang Min Hyun and Kim So Hyun. The character arcs are will developed, showcasing the progression of Kim Do Ha and Mok Sol Hee’s relationship built on trust and support, as well as progression made within their individual relationships with others.
The plot twist at the end took me by surprise and kind of felt like it came completely out of left field, but Yun Ji On’s portrayal had me feeling a little sorry for him in the end and all the emotions he had to keep bottled up for all these years.
From the suspense of the murder mystery to the heartwarming moments shared between Kim Do Ha and Mok Sol Hee, My Lovely Liar has earned its place on my rewatch list. If you’re in the mood for a series that will keep you guessing while tugging a little at your heartstrings, this series is a good one to add to your watchlist.
